Interim Leadership

The Client: Global manufacturer of complex aircraft engine components.

Role: HMC’s Principal Consultant served as Interim General Manager, leading 300 employees across two shifts at four locations. He had full P&L responsibility and was accountable for driving business objectives and managing functional and operational performance while the company searched for a permanent solution during a critical merger transition.

Situation: The client had been operating without a General Manager for an extended period and was approaching a merger with another company to form a new entity. Over the previous seven years, the company had cycled through eight General Managers, leading to high leadership attrition, low employee morale, and instability within the workforce. Faced with this turbulent environment, the CEO and COO selected HMC’s Principal Consultant as the Interim General Manager to stabilize the organization, improve morale, and guide the company through the merger transition until new leadership was in place.

Approach: HMC’s Principal Consultant employed a servant leadership approach to build trust, foster communication, and re-engage the workforce. Key steps included:

  • Leadership Coaching: HMC held a series of coaching sessions with the leadership team to align them with the company's vision and foster collaboration. These sessions were designed to empower leaders to take ownership of their roles during the merger process.

  • Open Communication: To address the low morale, HMC focused on transparent and frequent communication with both management and frontline employees. This included preparing the leadership team for the transition to the new company and co-presenting the merger plans during multiple all-hands meetings.

  • Merger Transition Leadership: HMC played an instrumental role in guiding the organization through the complexities of the merger. He helped shape the messaging and delivery of the new company’s strategy to employees, ensuring a seamless transition with minimal disruption.

Results: Under HMC’s leadership, the organization stabilized, and the leadership team became more motivated and engaged. Employee morale saw a marked improvement as the workforce became more informed and reassured about the company’s future. The merger transition proceeded smoothly, with employees aligned with the new company’s objectives, allowing for a seamless leadership handover to the new management team.
